On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2020, St+art India Foundation, in collaboration with Adidas Originals and Asian Paints, unveiled an urban art intervention at the basketball court of St. Andrews College, Mumbai. This unique initiative, under the broader project umbrella of St+art Courts, celebrated inclusivity in sports through a typographic mural designed by New Delhi-based artist Khatra.

The Artwork
At the heart of the intervention was Khatra’s bold typographic mural carrying the impactful message, “Girls = Boys.”Using vibrant colors—pink and blue—the mural challenged the stereotypical associations of gendered colors. It emphasized that color, like sport, is inherently neutral and devoid of discrimination. By juxtaposing these hues, the artwork served as a visual reminder to move beyond societal labels and embrace equality.
The design featured Khatra’s signature style, combining clean typography and abstract forms for accessibility and resonance. Alongside the central message, the stencil typography “Sport Doesn’t Care” was inscribed on the side of the court, reinforcing the idea that skill, effort, and perseverance are all that matter in sports—not gender, race, or background.

The Vision
This initiative was part of St+art Courts, a project dedicated to rejuvenating playgrounds and sports courts across the country with urban art. The transformed basketball court at St. Andrews College was envisioned as an iconic public space for Mumbai, promoting the spirit of sportsmanship, inclusivity, and community-building. By integrating art into everyday spaces, the project aligned with St+art India’s larger mission of creating accessible, democratic art interventions that engage diverse audiences.
The court now stands as a vibrant representation of equality and inclusion, inspiring individuals of all genders to play, compete, and thrive on an equal platform.
