From your strength, I weave Beauty

by Shilo Shiv Suleman

Shilo Shiv Suleman (1989) is an Indian contemporary artist whose work encompasses illustration and installation art. Her practice focuses on the intersection of magical realism, art for social change and technology. In recent years, she’s been engaging with biofeedback technology and the interaction between body and art. She has created large-scale installations, apps and sculptures and has also designed installations for some of the world’s biggest festivals and conferences, including Burning Man. She is the founder of The Fearless Collective, which engages with gender issues and art for social change in India.

Shilo and The Fearless Collective worked with the women of Sewing New Futures to create this piece that talks about the hidden lives and subjugation of generations of trafficked women. Two women, one old and he other younger, can be seen emerging from the mist of Delhi to reveal their stories, fearlessly demystifying their presence. The Sewing New

Futures team engaged women subjected to trafficking in the Najafgarh community in a participatory process to help bring this piece to life. Throughout the week-long painting of the wall, the girls converted the entire block into a party, with music blaring through speakers and girls in their colourful attire — it is the celebration of the woman spirit.
