K.R. Flower Market

In Bangalore’s historic K.R. Market, one of Asia’s largest flower markets, artist Shilo Shiv Suleman created a mural as part of St+art Bangalore 2016. Founder of The Fearless Collective, Suleman is celebrated for her work at the intersection of gender and art-based activism. She found inspiration in the vivid colours and gentle energy of the market, a place where men meticulously weave and sell delicate flowers, challenging conventional ideas of masculinity.

Shilo spent seven days in the market, engaging with flower vendors in a participatory process to explore the softer side of masculinity. She posed reflective questions like “Does handling flowers every day cultivate gentleness?” and “Are gender roles fluid?” Through these conversations, Suleman envisioned a mural depicting two men emerging from flowers, weaving a jasmine garland, with roses blooming from their skin and beards—symbolising strength intertwined with tenderness.

Her mural’s progress met initial resistance; vendors suggested painting a king or film star, aligning with Karnataka’s cultural norms. However, through dialogue, Shilo garnered support, highlighting the mural’s intent to honour the people of K.R. Market. For Shilo, the mural was more than an artwork; it represented a reclaiming of public space, urging viewers to recognise and embrace gentleness in a traditionally chaotic, masculine setting.
