Naavu Idhevi - We Exist

by Aravani Art Project

The ‘Naavu Idhevi - We Exist’ mural by the Aravani Art Project was created as part of St+art Bangalore 2016 to foster a safe, inclusive space for the transgender community through art. Located on Dhanvantri Road, the mural aimed to break barriers between the trans community and the public by engaging both groups in a shared, participatory painting process.

Recognising the historical marginalisation and segregation of the trans community, this project offered a platform for mutual respect and integration. As the mural came to life, a sensitisation session invited the public to engage in conversations around acceptance and inclusivity, encouraging participants to reflect on the notion of “us” and “them.” The day was filled with song, dance, and celebration, affirming the aspirations of the Aravani community to lead dignified lives beyond societal limitations.

Using geometric patterns characteristic of the collective’s style, the mural features a fluid face symbolising gender inclusivity, combined with a Hibiscus flower—a plant known for containing both male and female parts, growing along the fringes but vibrant and unapologetic. The artwork serves as a reminder of Bangalore’s historical acceptance of gender fluidity, resonating with the city’s diverse social fabric and emphasizing the right of all individuals to exist freely and visibly in public spaces.
