NAMMA CHENNAI
by Shiva Nallaperumal, Hanif Kureshi
Namma Chennai (Our Chennai) is a typographic sculpture celebrating the pride and
spirit of Chennai, proudly supported by the Greater Chennai Corporation. Located on the iconic Marina beach, a promenade established in 1884. The sculpture stands opposite the historic Queen Mary’s College, one of the oldest women’s-only colleges.
An outcome of the St+art Chennai 2020 festival organised by St+art India Foundation, the sculpture is a landmark for people to come to and express their love for the city of Chennai. This sculpture is part of a series of typographic sculptures created across the country to foster new ways for the people to engage with their cities.
People belong to their city, and the city belongs to its people. This is ‘Namma Chennai’.
