This must be the place

Georgia Hill (1988) is a multidisciplinary artist specialising in hand drawn type based artworks that combine bold, monochromatic textures and lettering within experimental compositions. Her works are deep reflections on human connections, time, space and community. Hill’s art aims at creating a moment of reflection for the viewer through its heavy details, which can often seem excessive for the eye. Georgia has showcased her multimedia works across galleries in Australia and participated in street art festivals across the world.

Hanif Kureshi (1982-2024) was an Indian artist and graphic designer who worked with street art and typography. His exploration of the genre led him to create a fresh artistic expression while still being mindful of traditional Indian hand-lettering techniques. His work takes form in murals, installations and community-based projects. Hanif ran the Handpainted type project, and he is also the co-founder of St+art India Foundation. His works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou Paris, Triennale Design Museum, among others.

Georgia Hill began using the phrase ‘This Must Be The Place’ as a tag on the streets in varied mediums and contexts to explore the sense of belonging communities have with their surroundings. In India, her collaboration with Hanif led her to explore a site-specific version of this statement.

Embedded within this piece, in an abstract manner, are the words ‘Must’ and the Hindi word ‘Yahaan’ (Here), almost dissolved within the radiating black and white lines. Reading like an optical illusion, both words converge to reflect on the multiplicity in belonging that exists in most urban cities across the world, and in Lodhi - a neighbourhood once known for its colonial history, now identified as a hub for street art in the city.
