Untitled: Daku 2
by Daku
Daku’s untitled mural in Kannagi Nagar addresses the severe water crisis that has impacted Chennai and other parts of India. The mural references the dire situation in June 2019, when Chennai declared "Day Zero," marking the depletion of its primary water reservoirs. According to NITI Ayog’s reports, 21 cities in India could face similar groundwater scarcity, affecting 100 million people by 2020, with 40% of the population potentially lacking access to drinking water by 2030.
The mural cleverly uses sunlight to emphasise the urgency of this issue. It appears fully visible only as the sun rises, symbolising the city’s daily and cyclical wait for water. This effect serves as a metaphor for the pressing reality of water scarcity that re-emerges annually, mirroring the uncertainty of access and the looming crisis each year.
