Valley of Elements

The second edition of Craft to Contemporary St+art residency brought together Warli artists Mayur and Tushar Vayeda, who are redefining the legacy of Warli art by incorporating contemporary themes and techniques. Warli art, tracing back to 2500 BCE, originates from the Warli tribe in Maharashtra and is traditionally a minimalistic expression of tribal life, flora, and fauna.

During their residency at St+art Studio in Goa, the Vayeda Brothers experimented with new mediums and techniques while staying rooted in Warli’s visual grammar. They explored contemporary depictions of flora and fauna from their village, integrating these elements with a broader, modern narrative. This creative exploration culminated in a mural at Lodhi Art District, where they expanded the Warli tradition into a more contemporary language, representing a significant evolution in this ancient art form.

Through this residency, the brothers demonstrated their ability to merge traditional artistry with inspiration from their travels, offering a global perspective while retaining the essence of Warli culture.
