We Love Delhi

by Lek and Sowat, Hanif Kureshi

Before they landed in India, Lek & Sowat were intrigued by the idea of collaborating with Indian sign painters, but also wanted to use a lot of colour in their work. Post discussions with Hanif, Sowat decided to paint characters resembling Sanskrit letters to form a base, which Lek then half-erased with water to create an effect that they describe as 'colour rain', drawing inspiration from the festival of Holi. After speaking with the children of the community who played cricket at the block every day, they decided to write the text 'We Love Delhi' in Hindi that Hanif painted on top of the Sanskrit cyphers to create a piece that everyone in the neighbourhood could relate to and enjoy.
